In a move aimed at invigorating economic ties, India and Canada have launched a joint trade and investment platform. This initiative is designed to facilitate direct dialogue between business communities and encourage new investment opportunities. A joint statement released on Friday highlights the platform’s role in bringing the industrial sectors of both nations closer and strengthening long-term business partnerships.
This announcement follows Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Canada from May 25 to 27, where he engaged in discussions with key industry representatives and trade organizations. During the visit, he also held a crucial bilateral meeting with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, focusing on trade, investment, and economic cooperation.
The new trade and investment platform, according to the joint statement, will provide Indian and Canadian business leaders with a shared space to identify new business opportunities, promote investment, and fortify commercial ties between the two countries. Officials believe that regular dialogue and direct contacts will accelerate business activities and unlock opportunities for collaboration in new sectors.
In addition to economic cooperation, both nations have agreed to enhance people-to-people connections. This includes facilitating business travel, encouraging the movement of professionals, and strengthening direct business relationships. Such measures are expected to create a conducive environment for investment and trade expansion.
The discussions also reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), viewed as crucial for the economic relations of the two countries. According to officials, this agreement could improve market access, strengthen supply chains, and increase investment flows. Both countries aim to continue negotiations and finalize the agreement by the end of the year, which is anticipated to reduce trade barriers and generate new economic opportunities in various sectors. Furthermore, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, announced plans to lead a special trade delegation to India later this year, with the goal of connecting Canadian companies with the Indian market and expanding cooperation between the industries of both countries. Experts believe these recent initiatives will bolster economic relations between India and Canada and foster new opportunities for collaboration in investment, manufacturing, technology, and other areas, with both governments focusing on enhancing business dialogue in the future.
